Week One: Cutouts

Cutout

This picture was taken with a digital SLR, winter semester by the railroad tracks past the temple. To make the cutout I used the quick selection tool and some feathering to smooth the edges. Then cutout was placed on a new white canvas.

  1. Stevie - I really like your original image. Your angle/composition is solid and the way that the sign is leaning adds character. The way that the lighting is captured is wonderful. Very warm but very real. You did a great job with your cut out, from the small thumb print it looks like a rough edge on the pole but once it is enlarged I could see that it was part of the pole! Great job.

  2. Your cutout looks really nice. I kind of wish there was more light on the sign for the purposes of the cutout, even though in the original image I love the lighting the way it is.

  3. The original is a great shot! The cutout is great also. It's practically perfect. The lighting is superb and it lends itself to making the cutout that much better. I like how you cropped the image of the sign closer so that it is much more usable.

  4. By the way you explained what you did, you make sound so simple - unfortunately that wasn't the case for me. But I really liked what you did with the signs - it's a great shot all around and the cut out is very clean and precise.
